2025 SSATP AGM - Africa Status Report on Road Safety 2025
Presented by Binta Sako, Technical Officer, WHO Africa Region | SSATP Annual General Meeting, March 25, 2025
This presentation provides an overview of the Africa Status Report on Road Safety 2025, a regional assessment led by the World Health Organization to inform the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030. Drawing on data from 49 African countries, the report highlights the growing burden of road traffic injuries—accounting for 24% of global road deaths despite Africa having just 4% of the world’s vehicles. It analyzes road safety performance across five pillars: institutional management, safer roads, safer vehicles, safe road users, and post-crash response. Key findings underscore the need for improved data systems, stronger legislation, and coordinated action to address the disproportionate impact on vulnerable road users. The report calls for a system-wide approach and stronger leadership to drive evidence-based reforms that can save lives across the continent.
