Fare collection technologies are required to enable the large majority of fare collection procedures, and have been designed to protect the security of the revenues arising and the accuracy of the transactions involved. In most cases, the technologies also enable an audit trail so that any malfeasance can then be traced back to the perpetrator.
The variety of technologies available is wide, and constantly evolving. These range from simple and robust products that are applicable in even the most basic of operating environments, through to the intelligent transport systems (ITS) that are based on modern electronic and communications advances.
