Event Overview

Urban mobility in Sub-Saharan Africa is at a crossroads. Rapid urbanization, population growth, and limited formal transport infrastructure have made informal public transport (IPT)—including minibuses, shared taxis, motorcycle-taxis, and other locally adapted modes—the backbone of daily mobility for millions. Despite its critical role, IPT is often marginalized in policy and planning, viewed as a temporary solution until formal systems can be expanded.

The recently published SSATP report, Embracing Informal Transport: A New Paradigm for Urban Mobility, advocates for a shift in perspective: rather than seeking to replace IPT, cities should enhance and integrate it as a central pillar of urban transport strategies. The report draws on case studies from 14 African cities, highlighting practical reform levers, lessons learned, and the importance of collaboration, capacity building, and incremental change.

This webinar aims to disseminate the report’s findings, foster dialogue among practitioners and policymakers, and equip participants with actionable strategies for improving urban mobility through the enhancement of informal transport.

Objectives
  • Present the key findings and recommendations of the SSATP report.
  • Share experiences from cities at different stages of IPT reform, highlighting successes and challenges.
  • Discuss practical strategies for integrating and improving informal transport in urban mobility frameworks.

Facilitate knowledge exchange among policymakers, city officials, transport operators, and development partners.
