Enhancing Financial Sustainability and Commercial Viability of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Sub-Saharan Africa

This presentation entitled 'Enhancing Financial Sustainability and Commercial Viability of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)' was made by Hongye Fan and Edward Beukes (World Bank) at the SSATP Annual General Meeting in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. It provides an overview of the World Bank's analytical project to improve the financial sustainability and commercial viability of BRT systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project was initiated to identify key factors, investigate the private sector's appetite for BRTs in SSA, and identify solutions tailored to Sub-Saharan Africa cities. It highlights major factors to consider fo transforming a BRT idea to a viable BRT project, the role of incumbent operators, and the demand patterns in addition to providing a sneak peak into an analytical tool (in development) that can be used by stakeholders to asses likely commercial viability and financial sustainability of BRT projects.
