Module 2: Challenges for Mainstreaming Gender in Transport
2.2. Women's and Girls' Multiple Roles
Most women and girls must continuously balance social, economic and
community roles with different transport needs. In contrast, much of
men's time is devoted to economic, income earning activities and leisure,
so they have more flexibility regarding use of their time.
- Economic: Paid and unpaid work, collection of
water and fuel, food production and processing for household consumption.
- Social: Household management and child-care, care
for the elderly and sick, church leadership.
- Community development: Participation in construction,
management and maintenance of water, energy, schools, health facilities,
roads and footpaths, and natural resource management.
