2.2. Women's and Girls' Multiple Roles

Most women and girls must continuously balance social, economic and community roles with different transport needs. In contrast, much of men's time is devoted to economic, income earning activities and leisure, so they have more flexibility regarding use of their time.

  • Economic: Paid and unpaid work, collection of water and fuel, food production and processing for household consumption.
  • Social: Household management and child-care, care for the elderly and sick, church leadership.
  • Community development: Participation in construction, management and maintenance of water, energy, schools, health facilities, roads and footpaths, and natural resource management.
Roles Transport Needs
Economic
  • Getting to fields for cultivation and harvest.
  • Collecting fuel and water.
  • Traveling to purchase agricultural inputs.
  • Taking goods to market.
  • Finding and traveling to work.
  • Seeking credit and other financial support.
Social
  • Taking children to school.
  • Visiting health clinics.
  • Traveling to care for sick relatives.
  • Going to religious services.
  • Traveling for funerals and extended family needs
Community Development
  • Planning, construction and maintenance of community infrastructure.
  • Travel to community meetings.
  • Attending training programs.
  • Acquiring spare parts and materials.
  • Travel to work on community service projects.
  • Natural resource management.
