WEBINAR: Using Data and Digital Technologies to Transform Road Safety

Date: Tuesday, November 11, 2025
Time: 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM (Washington, DC) | 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM (Nairobi)
Format: Online webinar
Event Overview
Africa continues to face the highest road traffic fatality rate in the world—19.6 deaths per 100,000 people. Every year, an estimated 260,000 people lose their lives on the continent’s roads, accounting for 24 percent of global road deaths despite Africa having less than 4 percent of the world’s vehicles. Pedestrians, cyclists, and users of two- and three-wheelers make up more than half of these fatalities, underscoring the urgent need for data-driven and evidence-based solutions.
As the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims approaches, this webinar will explore how data and digital innovation can help countries design safer, more resilient, and more inclusive road systems. Hosted under the series “Data and Knowledge to Support Innovations, Resilience, and Inclusivity in Transport,” this session will bring together experts from the World Bank’s ieConnect for Impact program, the Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF), and the Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP) to discuss how evidence-based data and digital technologies can inform and transform road safety policies in resource-constrained settings.
The webinar will highlight:
- Innovative approaches for collecting, analyzing, and leveraging road safety data;
- Lessons from Nairobi, Kenya, where diagnostic tools, data analytics and impact evaluation are informing road safety policies and incentivizing safer driving; and
- Ways to operationalize data for policy development, improved institutional accountability, and targeted road safety investments.
