WEBINAR: Safe Infrastructure for Active Mobility in Africa - Protecting Cyclists & Pedestrians
In commemoration of World Bicycle Day, this webinar brought together policymakers, road safety authorities, urban mobility experts, development partners, and practitioners to explore how African countries can accelerate the delivery of safe and sustainable infrastructure that supports walking and cycling as viable modes of transport.
The African Association of Road Safety Lead Agencies (AARSLA) and the Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP) convened a timely and solutions-oriented dialogue on advancing safe infrastructure for active mobility across Africa, with a focus on protecting cyclists and pedestrians.
Building on the Safe System approach, the session examined how infrastructure can be intentionally designed to anticipate human error, reduce risks, and protect all road users. It also highlighted the growing importance of active mobility not only as a road safety priority, but also as a critical contributor to public health, climate resilience, accessibility, and sustainable urban development.
The webinar drew on African experiences and international frameworks, including the Pan African Action Plan on Active Mobility (PAAPAM), while creating space for peer learning and practical exchanges on scalable interventions that can be adapted across diverse African contexts.
The session explored:
- Designing Safe Roads for Cyclists and Pedestrians
- Integrating non-motorized transport into urban planning
- The PAAPAM Framework
- Low-Cost, High-Impact Infrastructure Solutions
- Data-Driven Road Safety and Infrastructure Decision-Making
- Climate-Resilient and Sustainable Transport Systems
The webinar served as an interactive exchange, encouraging African road safety and mobility institutions to share experiences, identify common challenges, and collectively explore practical pathways toward safer infrastructure and more inclusive mobility systems across the continent.
