15th Road Management Initiative (RMI) Coordinating Committee Meeting Proceeding, Country Coordinator's Reports -- Part II

The Fifteenth Annual Coordinating Committee for the Road Management Initiative (RMI) for the Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP) was held in Saly, Senegal May 16-19, 2001. This was inclusive of the joint session in the morning of May 19 with the Rural Travel and Transport Program (RTTP) whose Meeting was held at the same location May 19-22, 2001. This report is divided into two parts.

Port and Maritime Transport Challenges in West and Central Africa

This Working Paper presents the current trends in maritime transport and port sectors in West and Central Africa (WCA), and proposes several policy recommendations to improve maritime transport and port efficiency in order to enhance economic growth. West and Central African economies, which depend on maritime transport for an overwhelming proportion of their trade, rely on efficient maritime transport and port sectors to be competitive on world markets.

Non-Motorized Transport in African Cities -- Lessons from Experience in Kenya and Tanzania

This document is based on a program of Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) Infrastructure and Services in Kenya (Nairobi and Eldoret), and Tanzania (Temeke, ward of Dar es Salaam and Morogoro). It aims to: a) comprehensively document the background to urban mobility in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), b) describe the NMT pilot projects and their post-project monitoring, c) document the various assessments of this program which were previously undertaken, and, d) draw the "Lessons from experience" as a potentially useful instrument for the formulation and implementation of future NMT programs in SSA.

SSATP Review of Poverty Reduction and Transport Strategies -- PRTSR Guidelines

This report discusses the process and methodology involved in developing a practicable method for undertaking a comparative analysis of transport sector and poverty reduction strategies. The report notes that this is an important milestone in a process that has been ongoing since the 2000 Business Meeting and Initial General Assembly of SSATP. Those meetings began the SSATP Strategic Review and formulation of new governance arrangements.
