On-board vehicle, manned

Fare verification at alighting can be made either by the driver [if passengers alight at the front of the vehicle] or otherwise by the conductor if one is employed on the vehicle.

For single-door vehicles, fares verification by the driver at alighting inevitably conflicts with his duties in respect of boarding passengers and thus further increases stop dwell times. It is only therefore practicable where there is a low level of passenger turnover along a route.

On multi-door vehicles, driver validation is practicable only where the authorized flow of passengers is to board at the rear or central doors and to exit from the front door. Where a conductor is aboard the vehicle, the validation can be confirmed at the authorized alighting door on the vehicle wherever that is positioned.

However, it is common practice for conductors to validate travel on checking individual passengers and then to ascertain the alighting point at the time of validation. Experienced conductors will spot unusual alighting intentions, and will check at the stated alighting point that the passenger fulfilled his intentions and alighted accordingly.
