Some evidence of qualification for the concession will normally be required, though pensioners and the disabled may be accepted on appearance, and their uniform taken to be sufficient for the police and military.

However experience shows that validating passes can be vulnerable to fraudulent attack, both in the application process and through forgery of the documentation. Photographic identification is also required to prevent usage of the pass by others not qualifying for the concession. It has to be recognized, though, that thorough identity checks can significantly slow passenger flows, and so forgeries of fair quality may escape detection for some time.
