Fares related to number of boardings

This is sometimes used as a variant of the flat-fare system, whereby a discount in the total trip cost is offered to passengers forced to make one or more interchanges to complete their journey. This structure can also be used for periodic passes, with their validity confined to the routes nominated on the pass rather than the whole network.

Clearly such a structure requires there to be continuing authority to travel after an interchange, and for that authority to be recognized by all operators within a multi-operator network (with appropriate mechanisms for remuneration of the associated costs of carriage). However it does provide some equity for passengers unable to complete their journey on a single route, and therefore provides the network planners with greater flexibility in increasing transport efficiency through the use of planned interchange.
