Fares policy setting
Fares Policy setting
Description / objective
Fares policy and practice is covered in detail in the Fare Collection Systems Toolkit. It covers areas like the definition of fare system parameters and fare products, modalities of fares integration, the setting and review fares levels, and the choice of revenue collection processes.
ITS applications are an integral component of electronic fare collection or e-ticketing systems, and are explored further in the Fare Collection Systems Toolkit. Where a distance-related or zonal fare structure is chosen, vehicle location technology may be an essential element of the system.
Advantages and cautions
e-Ticketing may offer the potential for high levels of revenue integrity, but affordability of the card and its pre-loading may be a barrier to mobility of the poor and irregular travelers.
