Management of incidents

Management of Incidents

Description / objective

Effective management of incidents requires continual monitoring of the operational situation and vehicles’ technical condition, and responding to any problems that (could) disrupt service delivery. This would typically require rescheduling of services in the affected locality, deployment of any operational reserve, and communication of these changes to drivers and travelers for the response to take effect and offer the opportunity for journey changes.

ITS applications

Emergency and incident management is an integral component of most ITS operations management applications. These are supported by automated vehicle location and communications technologies, and traveler information applications.

Advantages and cautions

ITS applications are the only practicable method of ensuring effective incident management in real time. However the cost of the application has to be balanced against the extent of disruption that can be tolerated, and the likelihood that this might be exceeded.
