Vehicle maintenance

Vehicle Maintenance

Description / objective

Vehicle maintenance comprises the planned preventive and corrective repair processes involved in keeping fleets available, reliable, and in fit condition for passenger use, over their intended life cycle. This involves the planning of technical capacity and the provision of appropriate facilities, plant and equipment for the activities to be carried out in-house and identification of external contractors for those that are not. In-house activities are supported by materials procurement and stock control.

ITS applications

Condition-based maintenance systems may be enabled by in-vehicle data capture technologies in relation to monitoring the technical status of the drive-train and the parking system in particular.

Advantages and cautions

There is no substitute for a thorough manual inspection of vehicle condition to identify potential problems before they deteriorate into measurable defects.
